I’m Choosing An Engagement Ring – Platinum or White Gold?

When purchasing an engagement ring, many people are faced with an important choice- “Should I buy a platinum engagement ring or one made out of white gold?” The two metals, although both white, are quite different from each other. There are pros and cons to each side of the argument, therefore many people have a dilemma when it comes to this decision.

Platinum outperforms white gold in many areas. It is an highly durable metal and is much more resistant to scratching. Many people buy platinum since it feels much heavier and they feel they are getting “more” for their money. Platinum is also much more pure than white gold. Platinum is 95% pure while white gold can only be up to 75% pure. Therefore when you use platinum for your ring it gives the ring more shine than white gold would due to is purity. Platinum is also much more tactile than white gold, thereby much easier to use for custom engagement rings. On the other had, white gold also has its pros. White gold is much more reasonably priced than platinum. Platinum can be morecostly than gold, from $300 – $500 per ounce. So by choosing white gold you would have more money to spend on the actual diamond instead of pouring all of your cash into the setting. In addition, white gold is much lighter than platinum, making it much more desirable among people who prefer light weight rings.

No matter how many benefits something my have, it will always have its fair share of cons too. Platinum can be very expensive at times and might not be the worth the cost. 20% of the world’s population is allergic to he nickel contained in white gold. In addition, white gold (just like any other gold) is very sensitive to chlorine. Therefore, contact with chlorine can cause discoloration of a white gold engagement ring.

Whether you pick platinum or white gold for your engagement ring (or any other type of setting , for that matter), the final result will always remain the same: a beautiful creation that expresses your love towards your partner.
